BeachBows Roll On Opening Day Of Heineken Queen’s Cup

HONOLULU — The No. 15 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team kicked off the Heineken Queen's Cup with a pair of emphatic wins Thursday at Queen's Beach. The BeachBows (2-6) rolled past San Francisco and Tulane by identical 4-1 scores.

After hosting the top five teams in the nation in its season-opening tournament in late February, the Rainbow Wahine returned to the sand after a 11-day hiatus and broke into the win column in convincing fashion, dropping just two of 10 courts on the day.

Sunny skies and brisk winds greeted the teams on Thursday morning. UH picked up its first win of the season by taking four of five courts in straight sets vs. USF. The No. 1 pair of Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo were particularly dominating in a 21-12, 21-5 rout of Letzia Aquilino and Jacquelyn Strawn. It marked the second win of the year for UH's top pair. The No. 4 pair of Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler also picked up their second win of the year with a convincing 21-9. 21-17 over Burkleigh Smith and Branson Lennon.

The Dons nabbed their lone point at court 2 where MaKenna Towne and Kaydence Stormes edged the new pairing of Julia Lawrenz and Alana Embry, 22-20, 21-19. Despite that, UH improved to a perfect 3-0 all-time against the Dons who they met for the first time in a decade.

In the second match of the day, UH and Tulane squared off for just the second time ever and the first time since 2016. Much like the first match of the day, the BeachBows took care of business against a Green Wave squad led by former Rainbow Warrior volleyball player Eyal Zimet. UH nabbed all four of its points in straight-set fashion. Embry and Lawrenz bounced back from the loss earlier in the morning with a 21-14, 21-14 sweep of Sara Hall and Molly Trodd at the No. 2 flight. UH dropped its only point at the No. 3 court in a three-set battle with the BeachBows having already clinched the dual.

The Heineken Queens Cup tourney resumes on Friday morning, with the Rainbow Wahine slated to play three matches. The 'Bows begin play at 8:30 a.m. against Saint Mary's, followed by matches versus No. 17 Washington at 11:00 a.m. and a rematch against San Francisco at 2:45 p.m.
