Men’s Basketball Concludes Season With Road Loss At CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.  – In a must-win game, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell short in an 82-73 loss to CSUN in its regular-season finale Saturday at the Premier America Credit Union Arena.

With Cal Poly's 83-69 win at Long Beach State earlier in the day, UH needed a win over the Matadors to clinch the eighth and final spot in next week's Big West Championship in Henderson, Nev.

The 'Bows played like a team with its back against the wall for the first 20 minutes, staking a 39-38 lead at the break. But the Matadors used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to pull away. The Rainbow Warriors concluded the season 15-16 overall and 7-13 in the Big West.

The Matadors (23-9, 14-6), meanwhile, tied a school-record with their 23rd win of the season while securing a bye and a top-four seed in next week's tournament.

Marcus Adams Jr. led four Matadors in double-digits with 21 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Tyler Beard poured in 19 points, going a perfect 4-of-4 on three-pointers. As a team, CSUN drilled 10-of-18 from beyond the arc.

Gytis Nemeikša, who was inserted into the starting lineup after 10 straight games off the bench, led UH with 20 points, his second straight 20-point game on the road. Akira Jacobs added 14 points off the bench, while Tom Beattie had 13 points and Marcus Greene 12.

UH game out swinging from the start. The 'Bows took care of the ball (four turnovers) and the boards (20-20) against one of the nation's top rebounding teams to take a 39-38 lead at the break. The Rainbow Warriors led by as many seven, 37-30, late in the half on the strength of an 11-2 run. CSUN, though, scored the final five points of the half to make it a 39-38 game going into the locker room.

The Matadors continued that momentum in the second half as PJ Fuller scored CSUN's first nine points out of the locker room as they staked a six-point lead. It was a 51-50 game five minutes into the second half after a Beattie layup, but that's when CSUN make its decisive move. The Matadors scored 12 unanswered points to take a 63-50 advantage with 12 minutes left. UH would get no closer than eight thereafter as CSUN shot 59 percent in the second half to keep the 'Bows at bay.
