Men’s Volleyball Sweeps UC San Diego In Series Opener

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team got back in the win column with a straight-set win over 11th-ranked UC San Diego Friday in the first of two Big West matches at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.
 
The win gave the Rainbow Warriors (20-2, 3-0 BWC) their fourth consecutive 20-win season and seventh under head coach Charlie Wade. The win now puts Wade four wins shy of tying Mike Wilton's all-time wins record of 316.
 
Kristian Titriyski led the way for UH with a match-high 16 kills, hitting .387 while Louis Sakanoko added 13 kills, hitting .409 with seven digs. Adrien Roure added seven kills, seven digs, and four blocks.
 
As a team, Hawai'i hit .326 for the match with six aces and seven blocks.
 
The Tritons (16-5, 2-1) were led by Anthony Cherfan who tallied 13 kills.
 
UH jumped ahead 10-7 early in Set 1 before the Tritons answered right back to take a 11-10 lead. The Warriors would regain the lead, scoring three unanswered for a 21-18 lead and went on to take the set, hitting .278 while limiting the Tritons to .071.  
In Set 2, Hawai'i took a 20-17 lead after a 4-1 run and closed out the set, outscoring the Tritons, 9-4. UH hit .367 in the game with Titriyski and Sakanoko combining for 10 of the team's 15 kills.
 
UH started Set 3 with a 9-5 lead and made it 13-7 after Roure's block solo. Hawai'i led by as many as eight and Titriyski's 16th kill ended it.
 
The teams play again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., at SimpliFi Arena.
