BeachBows Defeat CSUN, Fall To LBSU On Final Day Of Big West Challenge

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The No. 17 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team wrapped up the Big West Challenge by splitting a pair of matches Sunday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on the campus of Cal Poly. UH took care of CSUN, 4-1, before dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 8 Long Beach State

The BeachBows (10-12) finished the three-day tournament with a 4-2 mark with the two losses coming against LBSU and host and No. 6 Cal Poly.

The first match of the day saw the Rainbow Wahine breeze past CSUN. The Beach Bows got straight set wins at the No. 1, 3 and 5 flights. UH also saw the duo of Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler pick up their first win at the No. 2 flight in four tries,  defeating Tia Mendiola and Julia Bazylevych 17-21, 21-13, 15-12. UH improved to 11-0 all-time versus CSUN.

In the tournament finale UH faced Long Beach State in the first meeting between the teams since last year's Big West Championship title match when the 'Bows beat the Beach on their home turf. This time, LBSU exacted revenge, winning four of five points. UH went down swinging on courts 1 and 2, falling by 27-25 and 26-24 counts, respectively in the deciding second set.

UH was able to gain a point against the Beach on the shoulders of Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo after they rallied for a 17-21, 23-21, 15-10 win over Natalie Glenn and Savannah Standage  on court 3. Tessa Marocco and Kasen Rosenthal entered the lineup for just the second time this season and fell to Tineke Hinton and Mahala Esser, 21-17, 21-12, at the No. 4 flight.

It was a rare win for LBSU over UH – just its second in the last 12 meetings between the teams. UH dropped to 1-12 this season versus nationally ranked opponents with the loss to the Beach.

The Rainbow Wahine will have a bye this coming week before returning to action in the Best of the West Tournament, April 4-6, in Laguna Beach, Calif.
