BeachBows Go 2-0 on Second Day Of Big West Challenge

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The No. 17 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team won both their matches on day two of the Big West Challenge Saturday at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. The Rainbow Wahine (9-11) defeated CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State by identical 4-1 counts.

UH is now 3-1 through the first two days of the round-robin tournament of conference foes. The BeachBows will conclude the event on Sunday with matches versus CSUN (7:15 a.m. HT) and No. 8 Long Beach State (9:45 a.m. HT).

In the first match of the day, the BeachBows cruised past the CSU Bakersfield. UH got all of their points in straight sets, including an emphatic win at the top of the order as Alana Embry and Julia Lawrenz defeated Paola Caten and Sarah Martin, 21-10, 21-16. The BeachBows preserved an unblemished record in 12 all-time matches versus the Roadrunners.

The second match of the day proved much more competitive despite the identical dual score as the first. UH jumped out to a 2-0 lead with straight set wins by Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo at the No. 3 court and Sydney Amiatu and Sydney Miller at No. 5. But the Hornets took UH to a third and deciding set on the remaining three courts. Sophie Buschmann and Kristen Serrano clinched the victory with a 21-16, 19-21, 15-12 win over Victoria Marthaler and Mia Guevara at the No. 4 flight.

The result was split on the final two courts with the dual match already decided. In the end, the 'Bows improved to a perfect 7-0 against Sacramento State.
