BeachBows Drop Final Two Matches at East Meets West Invitational

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The No. 18 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team concluded the weekend with a pair of losses to ranked teams on day two of the East Meets West Invitational Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier.  The Rainbow Wahine (6-10) were clipped by No. 11 LSU, 3-2,  before rounding on the day with a 4-1 setback to No. 12 Texas.

In the first match, UH and LSU engaged in a back-and-forth battle. UH took a 2-1 dual lead on the strength of wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The duo of Alana Embry and Julia Lawrenz earned a three set decision while Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler continued their torrid play with another straight set victory as UH took the advantage.

But LSU came back to win the final two courts to secure the victory. The deciding point came at the top of the order where Parker Bracken and Gabi Bailey clinched the dual for the Tigers with a 21-16, 21-16 win over Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo. In the process, LSU avenged losses in each of the previous two East Meets West Invitationals to the 'Bows.

In UH's final match of the tournament, Texas took down the BeachBows for its first win over UH in  four all-time meetings. UH extended the Longhorns to three sets on a pair of courts. UT's No. 2 pair of Emma Grace Robertson and Katie Hashman pulled out a 22-24, 21-14, 15-8 win over Embry and Lawrenz. UH garnered a point through the efforts of Burton and Lorenzo who rebounded from the tough three-set loss earlier in the day with a 14-21, 24-22, 15-6 rally over Chloe Charles and Eva Liisa Kuivonen.

The No. 3 pairing of Mann and Wandeler dropped their lone match of the weekend and just their second in the last 10 matches with a 21-18, 21-14 setback to Karin Zolnercikova and Maddison Parmelly.

Up next for the Rainbow Wahine is the Big West Challenge, March 21-23, as UH will take on all six of its conference foes over a three-day span on the campus of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
