Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short At UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.  – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team took it down to the wire before falling just short in a 76-72 loss to UC Santa Barbara Saturday night at the Thunderdome.

In a game of alternating runs, UCSB had the final say by scoring seven of the game's final nine points.  The Rainbow Warriors fell to 13-11 overall and 5-8 in the Big West with their fifth loss in the last six games. UH remains entrenched in seventh in the league standings.

UCSB, meanwhile, picked up its fourth win in its last five games to improve to 16-8 overall and 8-5 in conference. It marked the Gaucho's seventh straight victory in the series with UH.

Deuce Turner scored 23 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 2:09 left.  That offset a 23-point performance by UH's Tanner Christensen, who shot 10-of-13 from the floor, and added a team-high eight rebounds.

UH shot 59 percent in the second half, but couldn't overcome 20 turnovers which tied a season high. The 'Bows had 12 of those in the first half and did a better job after the break until two untimely turnovers in the final minute.

The game was a roller coaster from the beginning. The Gauchos scored 15 unanswered points to take a 20-7 lead midway though the first half. UH answered with a massive 19-2 run that turned a 13-point deficit into a four-point lead. But UCSB had the final say of the half, scoring 14 of the final 18 points to take a 39-32 lead into the locker room.

The Gauchos got a three-pointer on their first possession after intermission to take a double-digit lead. But again UH would respond. An 11-0 run put UH back up 55-52. From there it was nip-and-tuck in a game that featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes.

UH took a 70-69 lead with 2:16 left on a pair of Ryan Rapp free throws. But Turner answered with a three-pointer to give UCSB a 72-70 lead that they would not relinquish. The 'Bows had a pair of opportunities in the final minute to tie or take the lead but turned the ball over on both occasions. UCSB sealed the game with four free throws down the stretch.

Rapp finished with 18 points, one off his career high. Harry Rouhliadeff added 11 points, while Kody Williams chipped in 10.

The Rainbow Warriors will now return to the islands for a pair of home games starting with a matchup versus Long Beach State on Thursday, Feb. 13.
