KOHALA COAST, Hawai'i – University of Hawai'i senior
Tyler Ogawa carded a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, Thursday at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Course.
The Honolulu native played flawlessly, posting four birdies on his round and currently sits in a tie for 26
th place. Teammate
James Whitworth, who is one of three Rainbow Warriors competing as an individual, also shot 68, with five birdies and one bogey on his round.
Anson Cabello is one shot back with a 3-under 69 and is tied for 36
th place while
Dane Watanabe shot 1-under 71 and sits in a tie for 64
th.
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors carded 1-under 287 and are tied for 18
th place with Washington.
Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State leads the team standings at 26-under 262 followed by No. 2 Arizona State (264), No. 38 Oregon (268), No. 6 North Carolina (268), No. 17 Pepperdine (271), and No. 50 Pacific (271). Individually, OSU's Preston Stout leads the 123-man field at 10-under 62, the straight year he opened the tournament with a 62. Oregon's Eric Doyle is one shot back at 9-under 63.
Also competing for UH are
Garrett Takeuchi and
Josh Hayashida, who each shot 79.
Nathan Szpakowicz (76) and
Quinn Murray (91) are also competing as individuals.
The second round is scheduled for Friday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
