Men’s Basketball Falls On the Road At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.  – Cal Poly used a strong second-half push to hand the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team a 79-63 road loss Thursday night at Mott Athletics Center.

The game was tight for the majority and UH led by one with just over nine minutes remaining. However, the Mustangs ended on a 25-8 run while hitting their final eight field goal attempts of the game.

Cal Poly (9-15, 3-9) garnered its third win in its last four contests after an 0-8 conference start. UH, meanwhile, dropped to 13-10 overall and 5-7 in the Big West with its fourth loss in its last five games. The loss was UH's first to Cal Poly in five years, snapping a string of nine straight wins over the Mustangs.

Owen Koonce scored a game-high 20 points, all of them coming in the second half. Koonce kick-started the final decisive surge by scoring seven of Cal Poly's 11 unanswered points that put the the Mustangs up for good. Jarred Hyeder added 18 points while shooting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Gytis Nemeikša led UH with 13 points in 16 minutes off the bench. Ryan Rapp chipped in 10 points.

Cal Poly led for the majority of the first half and by as many as seven. But the 'Bows held the Mustangs scoreless for the final 3:06 to move ahead, 35-34, at the break.

The second half continued to be nip-and-tuck and Nemeiksa's bucket with 9:21 left gave the 'Bows a 55-54 lead. But that's when the Mustangs made their move, scoring 11 unanswered points to turn a one-point deficit into the first double-digit lead of the game by either team.

After holding Cal Poly to just 55 points, 33 percent shooting and a season-low seven three-pointers in the first meeting, the Mustangs shot 52 percent and drilled 11 three-pointers on their home court. Cal Poly also scored 21 points off of 14 UH turnovers and battled UH even on the boards, 31-31.

The Rainbow Warriors will next travel to UC Santa Barbara for an evening contest on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT at The Thunderdome.
