BeachBows Wrap Up OUTRIGGER Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic

HONOLULU  – The  12th-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team concluded the season-opening Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic with a pair of losses to top-5 teams Saturday at Queen's Beach. The BeachBows fell to No. 5 Stanford and No. 2 TCU by identical 5-0 scores.

It wrapped up an intense week of competition that saw the 'Bows (0-6) take on four of the top five teams in the nation and six of the top 11. UH couldn't pull out a victory versus the field but proved competitive in the majority of matches, despite the final tally.

No. 3 UCLA and No. 7 LMU finished with the top records in the round-robin tourney at 5-1 each. The Bruins took home the tournament trophy by virtue of its narrow head-to-head win over the Lions, 3-2, on Saturday morning.

The BeachBows suffered a sweep in the first match against Stanford but put up a fight throughout the order. Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo were in it at the top flight before falling 21-18, 21-19 to Brooke Rockwell and Ruby Sorra. UH's No. 2 pair of Julia Lawrenz and Sydney Amiatu went the distance with Taylor Wilson and Charlotta Bell before falling 15-11 in the final set.

UH had a chance to garner a point on Court 4 where UH's Jesse Mann and Jasmine Wandeler were also engaged in a three-set battle. Mann and Wandeler were up 12-9  in the final set, but Stanford's Chloe Hoffman and Clara Stowell ended on a 9-4 run to take it 18-16 and secure the sweep for the Cardinal. Stanford has now won four straight in the series and six of the last seven.

In UH's tournament finale, No. 2 TCU simply overwhelmed the BeachBows. The Horned Frogs won in straight sets on all five courts with the closest match coming at the No. 2 flight where Hailey Hamlett and Anhelina Khmil defeated Lawrenz and Amiatu 21-16, 21-13. TCU has now won five straight meetings over the 'Bows, who had previously won the first five matchups in the series.

The BeachBows return to action, March 6-8, in the Heineken Queen's Cup. UH will host Chaminade, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Tulane and Washington in the three-day tourney at Queen's Beach..
