IRVINE, Calif. — The fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i water polo team defeated No. 17 Indiana 10-6 on Friday to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
Jordan Wedderburn and Ema Vernoux led the team offensively netting four goals each. Three Rainbow Wahine tallied three steals including Bernadette Doyle, Morgan Rios and Daisy Logtens. Logtens went the distance in goal and recorded 11 saves.
The Rainbow Wahine got off to a quick 3-0 scoring run to begin the match. Wedderburn wasted no time in scoring in the first 40 seconds on a power play, followed by goals from Vernoux and Rios. Indiana ended the run with a score, but Stevilyn Griffin closed out the quarter with a goal to make the score 4-1.
Indiana opened the second quarter with a goal, but Wedderburn and Vernoux each netted goals to extend the lead. With five seconds left in the half, Wedderburn found the back of the net earning herself an early hat trick.
Vernoux also earned herself a hat trick by scoring her third goal on a power-play opportunity to open the second half. Wedderburn scored her fourth goal of the match with 14 seconds left in the quarter. The Hoosiers tacked on two more goals and the Rainbow Wahine lead remained at five.
Vernoux tallied her fourth goal of the match on another power play at the 4:49 mark of the fourth quarter. Indiana tacked on two goals of their own, but the lead built on the backs of Wedderburn and Vernoux helped the Rainbow Wahine secure their eighth win of the season.
UH continue play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational with a matchup against fourth-ranked Cal at 9:20 a.m. PT (7:20 a.m. HT) at the Anteater Aquatics Center. The 'Bows will play another match later in the day, with the opponent and time to be determined based on the results of the morning contests.
