LĪHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team carded a 1-over 281 – an 18-stroke improvement from the previous day – in Friday's second round of the 48^th John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Ocean Course at Hokuala.
 
The host Rainbow Warriors moved into a tie for 15^th place with Saint Mary's with a 580 total heading into Saturday's final round. No. 16 Utah continues to lead the field with a 545 total while Long Beach State climbed up five spots into second at 551. UNLV is third at 552 followed by Santa Clara (553).
 
Playing conditions at Hokuala were much better than Thursday's first round as twice as many golfers posted scores under par on Friday led by UNLV's Zach Little, who tied the course record with a 7-under 63. Utah's Sergio Jimenez holds a two-stroke lead at 8-under 132 followed by Little and two others.
 
Senior Tyler Ogawa carded a 1-under 69 to lead the Rainbow Warriors. The Honolulu native had a stretch of five birdies in eight holes on the front nine and is 7-over 147 for the tournament a tied for 72^nd. Junior James Whitworth and sophomore Dane Watanabe each shot even par 72. Whitworth is tied for 50^th at 4-over 144 while Watanabe is tied for 65^th at 6-over 146.
 
Junior Josh Hayashida, who was forced to withdraw midround on Thursday, managed to shoot 2-over 72 for one of the four counting scores. Sophomore Anson Cabello rounded out the UH contingent with a 5-over 75.
 
Nathan Szpakowicz, one of two Warriors competing as an individual, carded a 3-under 67 and moved up to a tie for 57^th at 5-over 145. The freshman from Vancouver, British Columbia posted seven birdies in his best round as a Rainbow Warrior. Garrett Takeuchi is in 99^th place at 156 after a second round 4-over 74.
 
The tournament concludes with on Saturday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
