Men's Tennis Holds Off North Dakota; Bode Records First DI Win

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team notched it's first win of the season holding off North Dakota, 4-3 as Azuma Visaya clinched the victory with a third set tie-breaker win. The back-and-forth battle between the 'Bows and the Fighting Hawks culminated in UH head coach Henddrik Bode recording his first Division I win. With the win, Hawai'i improved to 1-6 overall while North Dakota fell to 3-3 on Saturday night at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Warriors secured the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. UH's No. 1 duo of Azuma Visaya and Tianhao Hou led things off by defeating UND's Leandro Zgraggen and Ange-Kevin Koua by a break, 6-4. The matches on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts finished simultaneously with Karl Collins and Diego Dalisay knocking off Ethan Terry and Jerall Yasin, 7-5 at No.2, while Andy Hernandez and Quinn Snyder edged out Andrew Hayduke II and Leo Gallaiano in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (5).

In singles, Hawai'i's No. 4 Diego Dalisay unfortunately suffered an injury in the middle of the second set and had to retire. UH's No. 2 Quinn Snyder quickly defeated North Dakota's Koua in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. But the Fighting Hawks' Hayduke evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Collins at No. 3.

The last three matches all went three sets. Hawai'i's Tianhao Hou won his first set over Jayho Hong at No. 6. But although Hou fell in his second set tie-breaker, he pulled away to easily take Set 3, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1. UH's No. 5 Andy Hernandez also won his first set, but eventually fell in a hard-fought deciding third-set tiebreaker to Ethan Terry, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).

The match then hinged on the No. 1 match between UH's 77th-ranked Visaya and North Dakota's Zgraggen. Vidaya cruised to win the first set, but Zgraggen battled back to take Set 2 by a break to even the match at a set apiece. The two were on-serve in the third until Visaya was able to hold off Zgraggen in a third set tie-breaker to clinch the win, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (4).
The Rainbow Warriors have a week off before they head on their first roadtrip of the season. The 'Bows will travel to the Ninth Island to take on UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 9:00 a.m. HT. From there, the 'Bows will head to Phoenix, Ariz. to take on Grand Canyon on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Montana State on  Sunday, Feb. 16th.
