GAME STORYLINES
  • UH earned its 11th Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl bid but are appearing in the game for the 10th time. Hawai'i pulled out of the 2021 game due to COVID issues within the program.
  • UH holds a 5-4 all-time record in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. Most recently, Hawai'i captured the 2019 title with a win over BYU. UH also has titles in 2003, '04, '06, and '16.
  • The Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl is UH's 15th all-time bowl appearance (does not include cancelled 2021 Hawai'i Bowl) with an 8-6 all-time bowl record. It also marks UH's 12th bowl game in its home state. The Warriors are 6-5 in those games, which includes the 1989 Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl (L, Michigan St.) and 1999 Jeep O'ahu Bowl (W, Oregon St.).
  • UH is seeking its third straight bowl win, which would tie a program record (2003-06). Its last two wins were against Houston (2020 New Mexico Bowl) and BYU (2019 Hawai'i Bowl).
  • In the 22-year history of the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, UH has the most appearances (10) — 2002, '03, '04, '06, '08, '10, '16, '18, '19 and '25 — and the most championships (5).
  • UH and Cal will meet for the sixth time with the Golden Bears holding a 3-2 advantage. The teams last met in the 2016 season opener in Sydney, Australia with Cal winning 51-31.
  • UH is playing its second ACC opponent this season. Hawai'i opened the season with a 23-20 win over Stanford, which was previously its first meeting versus an ACC opponent.
  • UH finished the regular season with an 8-4 record and tied for fifth place in the Mountain West with a 5-3 league mark. Its eight wins are the highest win total since 2019 and most in a single-season under fourth-year head coach Timmy Chang.
  • Chang and Cal interim head coach Nick Rolovich were teammates at UH during the 2000 and '01 seasons. Chang had a program-record 50 career starts from 2000-04 while Rolovich made 12 starts from 2000-01.
  • Chang competed in the Hawai'i Bowl three times during his playing career and was the game's Most Outstanding Player in 2003 and '04. In 2003, he threw for 475 yards and five TDs in a triple OT 54-48 win over Houston. The following year, he amassed 405 yards and four TDs in a 59-40 win over UAB, capping a decorated career in which he was the NCAA's all-time passing leader.
  • Rolovich, a former UH head coach from 2016-19, guided the Golden Bears to a 38-35 win over SMU in the regular season finale. The Bears, who are seeking their first eight-win season since 2019, tied for seventh in the ACC standings.
  • Rolovich led UH to three Hawai'i Bowl appearances in four years as head coach with wins over Middle Tennessee in 2016 and BYU in 2019. This year marks his fourth Hawai'i Bowl appearance as head coach which is second only to June Jones' six (4 with UH and 2 with SMU).
  • The game features two starting QBs from west O'ahu — UH's Micah Alejado, who grew up in 'Ewa Beach and attended Saint Louis School before moving to Las Vegas in the 8th grade and Cal's Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who also grew up in 'Ewa Beach and prepped at Campbell High.
