Women’s Basketball Gets Back In the Win Column Versus UH Hilo

HONOLULU — Balanced scoring helped power the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team to a 61-47 win over Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

Seven UH players scored at least six points with freshmen Bailey Flavell and Kyra Webb leading the way with nine points each and the Rainbow Wahine (5-5) snapped a five-game skid with the in-state win over the Vulcans (3-4).

Although the Rainbow Wahine and Vulcans have regularly shared the floor in preseason exhibition games over the years, Thursday's game marked UH's first regular-season meeting with UH Hilo since 2020 and improved to 5-0 in the all-time series. The game was an exhibition for the Division II Vulcans of the PacWest Conference.

UH senior Imani Perez came off the bench for the first time this season and nearly had a double-double before halftime with eight points on 3-for-3 shooting and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks. Teyahna Bond also went 3-for-3 from the field and finished with seven points and the 'Bows shot 60% from the field in the first half and 48.1% for the game.

Jovi Lefotu made her first start of the season and provided a veteran presence in the backcourt for the 'Bows while contributing eight points, four rebounds and an assist.

UH Hilo shot just 29% but made five 3-pointers to stay within striking distance entering the second half.

After a bit of a slow start, UH broke out to a 17-8 lead with a six-point run capped  by a Perez 3-pointer from the corner. The 'Bows opened up a 12-point lead in the second quarter when Jade Peacock finished a fast break off a feed from Flavell, but the Vulcans answered with a 7-0 run to close the gap.

Perez scored five consecutive points and Bond's pull-up jumper extended the lead to 35-23 before the Vulcans scored twice to close to within eight at halftime.

UH opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to take control. Lefotu found Saniyah Neverson for a 3-pointer and finished on a drive to give the 'Bows a 15-point cushion. UH Hilo started the period 0 for 10 before finishing the quarter on a 7-1 run and the 'Bows took a 49-35 lead into the fourth period.
UH was never threatened in the fourth quarter, growing its lead to as many as 18 points. For the game, the Rainbow Wahine dominated inside, doubling up the Vulcans on the boards (48-24), while out-scoring them 40-10 in the paint.

The Rainbow Wahine will close out the nonconference schedule by playing in the Maui Classic on Dec. 19 and 20 at Seabury Hall in Makawao. The 'Bows will face Liberty and Montana State in the event hosted by Oregon State.
