Men’s Basketball Battles Past Chaminade, 93-87

HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii men's basketball team passed its final test prior to the regular-season with a hard-fought 93-87 exhibition win over Chaminade Sunday night at the Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The game had anything but the feel of an exhibition game. The teams battled for the full 40 minutes. UH led for the majority of the game, but Chaminade held a seven-point second-half lead.  Ultimately the 'Bows, pulled off the win over its intrastate rival with a strong finish.

Dre Bullock led UH with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, while Harry Rouhliadeff chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds. Hunter Erickson proved an integral part of the win, scoring all 10 of his points in a key three-minute stretch late in the game.

Kent King led four Sliverswords in double figures with 23 points.

UH turned the ball 22 times against Chaminade's pressing defense and struggled at the free throw line (24-of-38). But the 'Bows dominated the boards (59-32) and recovered at the line by hitting 10 of its final 11 attempts from the charity stripe to secure the win.

UH led for the entire first half but couldn't shake off the Silverswords. The 'Bows led by as many as nine points on multiple occasions. UH went to the line a whopping 23 times in the first half, but converted on just over half (13) of those attempts, while committing 10 turnovers against a pressing Chaminade squad.

The Swords tied the game in the opening minute of the second half on a Nate Sasser three-pointer, but UH answered with an 11-2 run to go back up by nine, 54-45, with 15:40 remaining.

But that's where the  game turned in Chaminade's favor. The Swords scored 15 of the next 16 points and eventually built a 68-61 lead with 8:29 left.

UH, however, didn't panic. Erickson, who went scoreless for the first 34 minutes of the game, got the 'Bows over the hump. With UH trailing by three with six minutes left, the graduate transfer from Utah scored 10 of the team's next 12 points. It was a run punctuated by a three-pointer with less than three minutes left that gave UH an 81-75 edge, a lead it would not relinquish.

The Rainbow Warriors now get ready for its regular-season opener, a road game at Oregon, on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT/5:00 p.m. HT.
