LA JOLLA, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team fought hard on the opening day of The Big West Fall Selection Event on Thursday at the Northview Tennis Courts hosted by UC San Diego. Two UH doubles teams won both their matches on Thursday to advance to Friday's quarterfinal round, while three Rainbow Wahine punched their tickets into the singles Round of 32.
The Rainbow Wahine got off to a strong start in doubles to start the tournament. All three UH pairs won their Round of 32 matches. Hawai'i's duo of
Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hanna Galindo cruised past Cal State Fullerton's Seha Yu and Milena Gevorgya, 8-3 and UH's
Emma Forgac and
Allaire Berl held off UC Irvine's Carlyna Fowler and Haily Huynh by a break, 8-6. The Rainbow Wahine's newcomer pairing or
Sophie Rachor and
Grete Gull defeated UC Riverside's Ramey Yu and Kei Kato also by a break, 8-6.
In the Round of 16, UH's Rachor/Gull upset top-seeded Paulina. Franco and Cecilia Costa of The Beach, 8-5/ Hawai'i's Nopomuceno and Galindo notched their second win of the day with an 8-6 win over Cal Poly's Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako and Alexa Ozrets, 8-6. Long Beach State's Diana DeSimone and Thea Jagare defeated UH's Forgac and Berl, 8-5.
On Friday, Rachor and Gull will face UC San Diego's Hāna Gamracy/Julia Visaya, while Nepomuceno/Galindo will take on second seeded Jessica MacCallum/ Candela Aparisi of Cal Poly. Times are to be determined.
In singles, Gull tossed a near shutout to win in straight sets over UC San Diego's Kamya Nair, 6-1, 6-0. In the "Battle of the Emma's, Hawaii's Emm Forgac upended UCSB's fifth seeded Emma Tutoveanu by a break in both sets, 6-4, 7-5.
In the late singles matches, UH's Nepomuceno fought her way back after losing the first set via tie breaker and winning the final two sets to down Cal State Fullerton's Amelia Zylberman, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5. Hawai'i's Berl fell in the closest match possible to UC Irvine's Maily Huynh by a pair of tiebreaker losses, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2)
UH's Galindo was in a battle with UCSB's Csarla Pacot, but an injury halted the match tied at a set apiece and Pacot leading 4-1 in the third frame. Pacot notched the victory, 2-6, 7-6 (5) 4-1 (ret.). Cal Poly's Candela Aparisi defeated UH's Rachor tin two, 6-2, 6-2.
