Women's Volleyball Falls at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team opened a three-match road trip with a three-set loss to Long Beach State on Friday at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.

After the Beach ran away early in the first set, the Rainbow Wahine (6-12, 2-5 Big West) battled deep into the next two sets before LBSU (14-5, 7-1) closed out its 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 win. UH dropped its fourth straight while the Beach ended the 'Bows' four-match winning streak in the series between the programs.

Cha'lei Reid led the UH attack with 10 kills and added three blocks and six digs. Miliana Sylvester added eight kills in 17 attempts with one error to hit .412. Bri Gunderson finished with six kills and three blocks.

Victoria Leyva posted 23 digs, marking her sixth match with 20-plus digs this season, and served up two aces.

Elise Agi led LBSU with 11 kills and Logan King added 10.

Leyva opened the match with an ace and the teams traded points early on. The Beach then took control with a 9-0 run that included two aces to open up a 15-5 lead. UH went on a 4-1 run late in the set with Sylvester putting away two kills and Tyla Reese Mane delivering an ace before LBSU closed out the set.

UH opened the second with a  4-0 surge capped by Leyva's second ace before the Beach rallied to catch the 'Bows at 8-8. The 'Bows took a 15-12 lead but Beach put together a 4-0 run to take the lead and another four-point burst pushed LBSU ahead 20-17. The Beach led 22-19 when Reid put down a kill then sent back a solo block to spark a 4-1 UH run and the 'Bows tied the set at 23-23 when Gunderson and Mane teamed on a block. A UH attack error gave LBSU set point and Rhiann Sheffie's kill sent the Beach into intermission with a 2-0 lead in the match.

LBSU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set and never trailed over the remainder of the match. UH stayed close before the Beach opened a five-point cushion at 18-13. The 'Bows got back to within three on four occasions, the last time at 22-19, but LBSU scored the final three points of the match to secure the win.

The Rainbow Wahine continue the road trip by taking on UC San Diego on Saturday at LionTree Arena in La Jolla, Calif. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Pacific Time (3 p.m. Hawai'i Time).
