WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The Hawai'i soccer team erased a halftime deficit to come back and secure a 1-1 draw with UC San Diego Sunday afternoon at Waipi'o Soccer Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but equalized with
Tatum Porter's 48th minute strike to add one point to their Big West total. At 1-1-4 in conference play, UH sits in a tie for seventh in the league standings with seven points on the year.
The draw extended UH's unbeaten streak in home conference matches to eight dating back to last year. The result also gave Hawai'i eight ties on the season, extending the program record to double the previous high for draws in a season of four.
After falling behind in the first half, the Rainbow Wahine came out firing after the break getting the equalizer less than three minutes into the second half. Porter found the back of the net when she took a pass from
Solala Nasu and ripped a shot off the bottom half of the crossbar that bounced down into the goal, making it 1-1 at the 47:43 mark.
UH's back line kept the Tritons off the board in the second half, fighting off a sequence of corner kicks in the 59th and 60th minutes while holding UCSD to five shot attempts after halftime. The 'Bows had one final opportunity to take the lead when Porter had a free kick attempt from about 10 yards outside the box with five seconds left, but the attempt sailed high.
The Tritons got the scoring started, getting on the board in the 24th minute via a Kennadi Borg goal off of an assist by Alexis Nguyen. Despite falling behind, the Rainbow Wahine controlled much of the match early on, owning a 5-3 advantage in shot attempts with two coming on frame.
It's the fourth time this year that the Rainbow Wahine have erased a halftime deficit to come back and tie a match. The 'Bows have now outscored opponents 12-6 in the second half on the year while UH allowed just one second half goal in its last eight matches dating back to Sept. 11.
The Rainbow Wahine close out their homestand with a match against CSUN on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Waipi'o Soccer Stadium (Spectrum Sports/ESPN+).
