Rainbow Wahine Fall to CSUN

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The Hawai'i soccer team fell into an early hole and couldn't recover in a 2-0 loss to CSUN on Thursday night at Waipi'o Soccer Stadium.

The loss ended the Rainbow Wahine's eight-match unbeaten streak in conference home matches that dated back to last year. UH now sits in ninth place in the Big West standings with three matches remaining.

The Matadors (6-6-3, 4-0-2 Big West) took control early, scoring a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes. Siena Navarra got the scoring started when she fired off a long-range shot that fell under the crossbar just over the out-stretched arms of UH keeper Kennedy Justin to make it 1-0 at the 6:02 mark. Paige Califf doubled the lead in the 18th minute on a penalty kick after a Hawai'i foul in the box.

UH (3-6-8, 1-2-4 Big West) had a couple of chances to get on the board early in the second half but couldn't cash in. Krista Peterson had a good look from right in front of the goal off a Cate Sheahan pass in the 49th minute, but CSUN keeper Riley Liebsack made a diving save. In the 57th minute Solala Nasu sent a shot towards the right side of the goal but saw it sail just wide.

The Rainbow Wahine finished the second half with seven of their season-high 11 corner kicks while totaling six shots, but couldn't find the back of the net.

For the eighth time in the last nine matches UH did not allow a goal in the second half, and have given up just six second-half goals all season. The 11 corner kicks were also the most in a match by Hawai'i since Oct. 16, 2022 vs. CSU Bakersfield. Midfielder Izzy Ayala again went the full 90 minutes, marking the 10th consecutive match that she has gone the distance and now 912 straight minutes played.

The Rainbow Wahine head out on their final road trip of the regular season when they travel to take on UC Davis (Oct. 23, 3 p.m. HT) and Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 26, 4 p.m. HT).
