Women's Tennis Battles CSUN In Big West Opener

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opens its Big West season against CSUN this Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11:00 a.m. HT at the UH Tennis Complex. Last week, the Rainbow Wahine went 1-1 to start dual match action with a win over Nevada and a loss against Washington.

 HAWAI'I RAINBOW WAHINE (1-1, Big West)University of Hawaii Logo• The Rainbow Wahine opened the season with a pair of high-powered tournaments. First UH hosted No. 9 UCLA and No. 10 California in the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational to open 2025. The 'Bows followed by hosting the defending NCAA Champions and No. 2-ranked Texas A&M Aggies and the 17th-ranked USC Trojans last week in the four-day Weinman Foundation Invitational.
-Last week, UH No. 3 senior Peppi Ramstedt went a perfect 2-0 to lead UH. She dominated in a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set win over Nevada's Silvia Costache on Friday. On Saturday against perennial power Washington, Ramstedt recorded UH's lone singles win against the Huskies, defeating Alexia Jacobs in a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-4 
-Overall, Joelle Lanz continues to lead the 'Bows with a 4-4 overall record. Lanz clinched UH's win vs. Nevada with a  6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win on the No. 6 court over UNR's Petra Janigova.
-In doubles, UH's No. 1 duo of Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova leads the 'Bows with a 4-6 overall record. Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno are right behind with a 3-7 overall record.

CSUN MATADORS (0-0 Big West)
CSUN - 2023Series Record: UH leads, 30-8. 
Streak: CSUN, won last meeting.
Last meeting: The Matadors edged out UH, 4-3 in the regular season finale last season (4/21/24). The CSUN victory snapped a UH winning streak at eight.  
Team notes: Last year CSUN recorded a 13-7 overall record and a Big West mark of 7-2 to finish in second place in the regular season. The Matadors fell in their opening match of the Big West Championship.
-Last week, senior Yulia Zhytelna won the Beach Winter Invite singles tournament. She defeated players from Portland, Long Beach State and Miami (OH)en route to captured the title.
