Men’s Basketball Races Past Cal State Fullerton, 95-86

FULLERTON, Calif. – In an offensive shootout, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team out-paced Cal State Fullerton, 95-86, Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym. With its third straight conference win, the Rainbow Warriors improved to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the Big West.

UH shot a season-high 61 percent from the field – including an incredible 22-of-25 on two-point attempts – in handing the Titans (5-13, 0-6) their fourth straight loss and keeping them winless in Big West play. The 'Bows eclipsed 90 points for the second time this year with its most points versus a Division I opponent this season and its most points ever in a Big West road game.

Gytis Nemeiksa led four Rainbow Warriors in double-digits with 20 points and eight rebounds. Tanner Christensen finished with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line, while Tom Beattie tied his career-high with 16 points and four assists. Akira Jacobs chipped in 14 points off the bench.

Donovon Oday scored a game-hight 28 points and added four steals for Fullerton.
UH led from wire-to-wire but it wasn't easy. The 'Bows held a four-point lead at the break and shot 67 percent in the second half. But the Titans stayed in the game by shooting 58 percent after the break and forcing 18 UH turnovers for the game in which they parlayed into 26 points. Fullerton also out-scored UH 52-44 in the paint.

But the Rainbow Warriors ultimately sealed the win at the free throw line where they went a sterling 36-of-38. The 36 free throws marked a school record. UH missed just one of its 27 attempts in the second half and were flawless from the line in scoring their last 12 points of the game. In all the teams combined to shoot 65 free throws, 42 of those attempts coming in the second half.

UH shot 57 percent in the first and led by as many as nine points before taking a 40-36 lead into the locker room. UH shot 10-of-11 from the free throw line but 10 first-half turnovers prevented the 'Bows from taking a bigger advantage into the break.

The game continued to be close throughout the second half and it was just a three-point game with a little more than eight minutes remaining. But that's when UH scored seven of the next nine points to gain some breathing room with an eight-point lead. Beattie scored five of those points with a spinning fast-break layup, followed by a corner three-pointer.

It marked a stretch in which UH hit 10 of its 11 field goal attempts. Fullerton kept pace with some hot shooting of its own and it was not until Nemeiksa's two free throws that UH took its first double-digit lead of the game, 85-75, with 2:23 remaining.

The Rainbow Warriors now return home for a pair of games, beginning with a meeting versus CSUN on Thursday, Jan. 16. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
