HONOLULU — Coming off two comeback wins to open the season, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team returns to SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center to take on Pepperdine in a two-match series on Sept. 6 and 7. The Rainbow Wahine rallied past SMU and San Diego last weekend to claim the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic title and will look to carry their momentum into the matchups with the defending West Coast Conference champion Waves.

'BOWS NOTES
- The Rainbow Wahine dropped lopsided sets in both of last week's matches in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, but stormed back each time, defeating SMU in five sets in the season opener on Aug. 30 and San Diego in four in the finale on Sept. 1 to claim the tournament championship.
- UH outside hitter Caylen Alexander earned tournament MVP honors after leading the 'Bows' attack in both victories. The junior posted a career high 28 kills in 66 attempts in the win over SMU, the highest kill total for a UH player since 2017. Alexander ignited the rally with 10 kills on 18 attempts, hitting .444, in the second set alone. She then put away 17 kills against San Diego. She had 11 digs in both matches to notch the 11th and 12th double-doubles of her UH career.
- In her first two career starts, outside hitter Stella Adeyemi posted double-figure kills in both matches and led UH with a .286 attack percentage to join Alexander on the all-tournament team. She had 10 kills against SMU and 11 against San Diego.
- Defensive specialist Victoria Leyva also made the all-tournament team after providing a spark in the back row in her first two collegiate matches. The freshman posted 10 digs against SMU and served up three aces against San Diego.
- Freshman middle blocker Miliana Sylvester put together a breakout performance against San Diego with 10 kills in 20 attempts while hitting .400.
- Senior setter Kate Lang distributed 76 assists, averaging 8.44 per set, in the tournament. After UH dropped the first set against San Diego, the 'Bows hit .317 over the next three sets in the 11-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 win.
- UH received 28 points in this week's AVCA/Taraflex Preseason Division I Poll, good for 31st in the poll.
THE MATCHUPS
- Pepperdine visits SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center for the second straight season. The 'Bows swept the Waves 27-25, 25-18, 25-21 on Sept. 8, 2023 in the OUTRIGGER Volleyball Challenge and lead the all-time series 31-4.
- Pepperdine won the previous meeting in five sets on Nov. 6, 2018 in Malibu, Calif., ending UH's 12-match winning streak in the series with the Waves.
- Pepperdine's last win over UH in Honolulu came on Sept. 12, 1997 in five sets (6-15, 15-9, 8-15, 15-7, 15-8).
- The Waves entered the season as reigning West Coast Conference champions after going 19-9 overall and 15-1 in conference play in 2023.
- The Waves are led by 10th-year head coach Scott Wong, who served as associate coach at UH from 2010-14 prior to being hired at Pepperdine. The graduate of Punahou School was also the first head coach of the UH sand volleyball program (2012-14).
- Wong has a career record of 163-98 and was named the WCC Coach of the Year in 2023.
- Pepperdine topped the WCC Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll and three players were voted to the WCC Preseason Team: senior Grace Chillingworth and graduate students Birdie Hendrickson and Riley Simpson.
- Pepperdine opened the season with two losses to No. 21 USC on Aug. 30 and 31 at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif. The Waves dropped the opener 19-25, 20-25, 21-25 and the rematch 25-22, 21-25, 17-25, 17-25.
- Opposite Riley Simpson led the Waves with 25 total kills (3.57 per set) while hitting .286. The 6-foot-3 graduate student transferred from Baylor this season and posted 13 kills on 26 attempts in her Pepperdine debut.
- Rosemary Archer had 46 assists in the series with USC and led Pepperdine from the service line with three aces.
- Pepperdine received 30 points in the AVCA/Taraflex Preseason Division I Poll.
