HONOLULU — University of Hawai'i middle blocker Miliana Sylvester picked up her second Big West Freshman of the Week award on Monday after posting her most productive and efficient performances of the season over the weekend.
 
Sylvester emerged as a focal point for the Rainbow Wahine attack in her first two Big West matches and delivered a team-high 30 kills while hitting .489 in UH's split with UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
 
She opened the conference season by putting away a season-high 16 kills on 30 attempts and was in on six blocks, including a solo stuff, against UC Irvine on Friday. On Saturday, Sylvester broke out to a 12-for-12 start against Cal State Fullerton before finishing with 14 kills on 17 swings with one error to go along with three blocks, one solo, in UH's first sweep of the season.
 
Her .765 attack percentage on Saturday was the highest mark in the Big West over the weekend and is the second highest overall in the conference this season. Her percentage was also the fifth highest in the country this season with 15-19 attempts and boosted her season average to .349, good for fourth in the Big West.
 
For the weekend, Sylvester averaged 3.75 kills per set, 1.13 blocks per set and 4.44 points per set.
 
Sylvester, a graduate of University Lab School, has started all 12 matches this season and ranks second on the team with 119 total kills and 2.20 kills per set. She leads the team with 40 total blocks, seven solo, and 0.74 blocks per set. She earned her first Big West Freshman of the Week award on Sept. 16.
 
The Rainbow Wahine (7-5, 1-1 Big West) will head out on their first Big West road trip of the season this week. They'll face UC San Diego (7-6, 1-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. Pacific Time (3 p.m. Hawai'i time) in La Jolla, Calif. They'll then take on Long Beach State (8-4, 2-0) on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid at 7:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. HT). The UH-Long Beach State match will be televised on ESPNU.
