Women's Volleyball Earns Three Big West Weekly Awards

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team claimed three of the Big West's weekly awards on Monday after going 3-0 last week and claiming the OUTRIGGER Invitational title.

Outside hitter Caylen Alexander posted the nation's highest kill total this season with 38 in a landmark performance against Texas State on Saturday and earned the first Big West Offensive Player of the Week award of her career. Middle blocker Miliana Sylvester picked up her first Big West Freshman of the Week award after posting 29 kills and 12 blocks over three matches, and senior Kate Lang earned her first Setter of the Week award of the season and 12th of her career.

Alexander's 38 kills on Saturday marked the highest total for a UH player since Kim Willoughby put away 38 against Washington on Sept. 7, 2002. The junior also became the first UH player to break the 30-kill barrier since 2016 and the first to reach 35 kills since 2006 on her way to earning tournament MVP honors. She hit .338 while taking 74 swings, the most for a UH player since 2012, and helped close out the victory with nine kills in the fifth set alone. She also served up two aces and posted 13 digs in her sixth double-double of the season and accounted for 40.5 points in the match.

Over the week, Alexander racked up a total of 75 kills — averaging 5.36 kills per set — and had three aces and nine block assists for a total of 82.5 points (5.89 per set). She had 20 kills in UH's stand-alone meeting with Texas State last Tuesday, 17 against Oregon State on Friday and 38 in the rematch with Texas State. She has posted 20-plus kills five times this season and moved up to third nationally with 5.09 kills per set and fifth with 5.61 points per set, and leads the Big West in both categories. She posted double-doubles in all three matches, averaging 2.50 digs per set. Alexander previously earned six Big West Freshman of the Week awards in 2022.

Sylvester posted 29 kills and 12 blocks over three matches last week and joined Alexander on the OUTRIGGER Invitational all-tournament team. Her kills total for the week was second on the team and she averaged 2.07 kills per set while hitting .333. She opened the week with 10 kills against Texas State and had 11 kills and seven blocks, including a solo stuff, against Oregon State. She capped the weekend with eight kills while hitting .389 in the rematch with Texas State.

Lang racked up a total of 145 assists, averaging 10.36 per set, and called her own number to put down 12 kills over the week. The senior also had 41 digs (2.93 per set) and posted back-to-back double-doubles on her way to OUTRIGGER Invitational all-tournament honors. Lang posted 39 kills and four assists against Texas State then went for 50-plus in the next two matches. She had 50 with 18 digs against Oregon State and capped the week with 56 assists, a season-high five kills and 17 digs against Texas State.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-1) departed on Sunday on their first road trip of the season and will face UNLV on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Cox Pavilion. The trip continues to Texas later in the week with UH facing No. 8 Texas on Friday in Austin and No. 20 Baylor on Saturday in Waco.
