PORTLAND, Ore. – Trailing by a goal late in the match, the Hawai'i women's soccer team put away a pair of scores in the final 10 minutes to close out the road trip with a 2-1 win over Portland State Thursday.
The Rainbow Wahine dominated possession for the entire match, out-shooting the Vikings 25-3 with 11 shots on frame.
Cate Sheahan delivered the equalizer in the 82nd minute while
Nalani Damacion delivered her third game-winner of the year with a goal in the 85th minute.
For the second straight match, the Rainbow Wahine fell into an early hole as the Vikings got on the board behind an Elle Frazier goal in the fourth minute. UH was stymied in its first 22 attempts as PSU keeper Natalie Cunningham finished the match with 10 saves and had a clean sheet going through 81 minutes.
Sheahan finally broke through for the 'Bows on their 23rd shot of the night, scoring off her right foot from close range off of a
Zoe Park through ball to make it 1-1.
Damacion put Hawai'i in front for good with just over five minutes to play when she converted on a failed PSU clear attempt from just inside the box. The freshman has scored the go-ahead goal in all three of UH's wins this year and is now tied for the team lead in goals.
UH's 25 shot attempts were its most in a match since Oct. 24, 2021 against Cal State Bakersfield while marking the first time since Aug. 22, 2010 vs. Wagner that the 'Bows out-shot an opponent by 20-plus attempts (23-1).
The win marked the Rainbow Wahine's second comeback victory of the year and second time scoring a go-ahead goal in the final 10 minutes of a match. Damacion now also leads the Big West with three game-winning goals on the season.
The Rainbow Wahine return to Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium to open Big West play against UC Davis Thursday at 7 p.m.
