2023-24 Men's Golf Season Review

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  •  In head coach Scott Simpson’s third season at the helm, the team broke last year’s single-season scoring record with a 290.80 strokes per round average and set program records for single round (273) and 36-holes (551) at the Ka‘anapali Collegiate Invitational on Maui and the 54-hole scoring mark with a 29-under 835 at the Kapolei Invitational on O‘ahu

 

  • Team posted 10 rounds of par or better, which tied for the second-most in a single-season in program history

 

  • Blaze Akana earned first-team All-Big West honors, a first for a UH golfer since joining the Big West in 2012, and led the team with a 71.67 scoring average which is No. 2 all-time in program history while his 72.02 career scoring average at UH is No. 1 all-time

 

  • Akana, who posted two Top 6 finishes, became the first UH golfer to compete in two PGA tournaments after qualifying for the Sony Open in Hawai‘i for the second time in January

 

  • Kolbe Irei’s 11-under 205 at the Kapolei Invitational tied for the fifth-best 54-hole score in program history

 

  • Josh Hayashida defended his Manoa Cup title with come-from-behind victory over UH teammate Anson Cabello in the Open Division final. The Manoa Cup quarterfinals featured five current Rainbow Warriors - Hayashida, Cabello, Isaiah Kanno, Kolbe Irei, and Tyler Ogawa.

 

  • Simpson was recently inducted into both the Hawai‘i State Golf Hall of Fame (February 2024) and Southern California Golf Hall of Fame (March 2024)

AKANA IN THE SONY OPEN

Blaze Akana made his second straight PGA Tour Event, the Sony Open in Hawai'i. He became the first Rainbow Warrior to take part in two PGA Tournaments.

HAYASHIDA DEFENDS MANOA CUP TITLE

Josh Hayashida defended his Manoa Cup title with come-from-behind victory over UH teammate Anson Cabello in the Open Division final.

PROGRAM HISTORY

The Rainbow Warriors set program records for single round (273) and 36-holes (551) at the Ka‘anapali Collegiate Invitational on Maui. The 'Bows also set a new program record with a 54-hole scoring mark with a 29-under 835 at the Kapolei Invitational on O‘ahu.
