Softball Splits With Cal Poly

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (13-18, 6-4 Big West) split their doubleheader against Cal Poly (18-12, 8-3 Big West). The Rainbow Wahine won the game that was halted on Friday night due to inclement weather, 3-2, but the Mustangs held off Hawai'I, 6-5 in the Saturday's second game at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai'i 3, Cal Poly 2
Game 1 was a continuation of Friday night's halted game which was suspended due to inclement weather.

Addison Kostrencich earned the complete game win to improve to 7-6 overall. She allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout.

On Friday night, Cal Poly's leadoff batter Jessica Clements launched a home run to start the game to take a quick 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Chloe Borges was hit by pitch and Mya'Liah Bethea drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Maycen Gibbs then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but on the play, the first baseman's throw bounced into rightfield foul territory allowing both Borges and Bethea to  score on the error. Soon after that play, the game went into a rain delay which extended into the game being halted with one out in the second, Gibbs running at second and Xiao Gin at the plate with one strike.

The opening game resumed on Saturday with Gin reaching on an error, but then Cal Poly starter Sophia Ramuno struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Maya Nakamura launched a solo home run to left to give UH a 3-1 lead. It was Nakamura's seventh of the season to tie Borges and Bethea for the team lead.

In the top of the sixth, Clements hit her second solo home run of the game to cut their deficit to one run as UH held a 3-2 lead.

CP's Ramuno fell to 7-7 in a complete game effort. She allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Cal Poly 6, Hawai'i 5
The Mustangs held off the Rainbow Wahine to split Saturday's games. The second game was interrupted by three different rain delays which totaled 31 minutes.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead on a two-run Kai Barrett home run in the top of the second. Cal Poly went on to load the bases with three-consecutive singles with two outs, but a flyout to left ended the inning.

With two outs in the third, Madixx Muramoto, blasted a three-run bomb over the leftfield fence to drive in Bethea and Ka'ena Keliinoi as UH leap-frogged over CP into a 3-2 lead. It marked Muramoto's first career home run. Muramoto had entered the game earlier in place of Maya Nakamura who left the game in the middle of the first inning after going down with an injury suffered at the end of the top of the first.

Cal Poly batted around the order, rallying for four runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Xiara Diaz hit a sacrifice fly and Kiara Blanchard hit an RBI single. With runners at second and third, UH starter Key-Annah Campbell-Pua was lifted and Borges re-entered the game as the relief pitcher. She walked the first batter to load the bases and then walked her second batter to force Juju Sargeant across the plate. Julia Barnett then singled to drive in Blanchard. Both runs that scored off Borges were attributed to Campbell-Pua.

After getting two quick outs to start the bottom of the fifth, Hawai'i started a rally. Izabella Martinez drew a walk and Haley Johnson followed with an opposite-field double to left to put runners at second and third. Dallas Millwood battled at the plate and came through with an opposite field single that drove in pinch runners Piper Neri and Kayla Tierney to trail by just one, 6-5.

UH starter Key-Annah Campbell-Pua threw the first three-and-two-thirds innings. She gave up all six runs on nine hits. Borges threw the final three-and-a-third innings giving up three hits with two walks.

Cal Poly's Ramuno started both games in the series. She threw the first two-and-two-thirds innings, allowing three run on three hits with two strikeouts. Judy earned the win, tossing two innings. She gave up two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Maier threw the final two-and-a-third innings. She had one walk and two strikeouts.

Hawai'i will now travel back to the mainland for a three-game series at UC Riverside. The series will start with a single game on Friday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m. HT and end with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 beginning at 10:00 a.m. HT.
