Men's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to UC Davis In Big West Quarterfinals

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The fifth-seeded University of Hawai'i men's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Friday in a hard-fought loss to fourth-seeded UC Davis, 4-3 in the quarterfinal round of the Big West Championship. The Rainbow Warriors gave the Aggies everything they could handle but UCD was able to edge out the 'Bows in the end at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif..

UH's No. 3 doubles team of Diego Dalisay and Guillaume Tattevin led UH to the first point of the day. The duo won their fourth-straight match together, downing UC Davis' Antreas Djakouris and Constanti Djakouris by a break, 6-4. Hawai'i's No. 1 team of Karl Collins and Andy Hernandez captured the point with a 7-5 win over the Aggies' Ivan Savkin and Ryan Torres for the early 1-0 lead.

Singles was a slugfest with both team going back and forth. The first match to finish was on the No. 5 court with UH's Sohta Urano falling to Lucas Bollinger, 6-1, 6-1 which evened the score at 1-1. UH's No. 2 Karl Collins then took down UCD's Ryan Torres handily, 6-2, 6-3 to give UH a 2-1 lead. But UC Davis' No. 3 Antreas Djakouris countered with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tattevin to level things at 2-2.

Hawai'i's No. 6 Dalisay, who missed much of the regular season with an injury, followed by recording his first regular season win as a Rainbow Warrior by holding off the Aggies' Sam De Vries. 6-1, 7-6 (5) to give UH a 3-2 advantage.

But, UC Davis then buckled down to win the last two tightly contested matches. On the No. 1 court, UH's Quinn Snyder fell to Constanti Djakouris, 6-1, 7-6 (3) which lifted the Aggies to a 3-3 tie. UCD's Max Fardanesh the out-dueled UH's Hermandez with the first two sets going to tie-breakers before Fardanesh pulled away for a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-1 win to clinch the quarterfinal match.

With the loss, UH finished the season with a 6-15 overall record while the Aggies improved to 13-9 overall. It marked the final match for Hawai'i's Blue Cockle and Guillaume Tattevin.
