MARICOPA, Ariz. – University of Hawai'i senior
Blaze Akana carded a 6-under 66 in the first round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, Monday at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. Akana was 1-over through his first 13 holes of Round 2 before play was suspended due to lightning.
His 66 matched his career low round which he set twice previously, including last month at the Lamkin Invitational. His round included seven birdies and one bogey. The Honolulu native was 5-under and tied for 17
th place.
UH shot a first round 3-over 291 and are currently tied for 19
th place at 6-over par. Grand Canyon has the lead by seven strokes over UNLV. GCU carded a 272 in Round 1. USC's Krando Nishiba, UC Davis' Mark Stephens, and UNLV's Yuki Moriyama share the lead at 9-under par.
Kolbe Irei is 1-under through 14 holes of Round 2 and is tied for 71
st place at 2-over. Also competing for the Rainbow Warriors are
Dane Watanabe (+4),
Anson Cabello (+6), and
Josh Hayashida (+7).
The field will complete the second round Tuesday morning before teeing it up for Round 3.
