CHULA VISTA, Calif. – University of Hawai'i men's golfer
Blaze Akana matched his career-low round of 6-under 66 on the final day of the RE Lamkin Invitational Tuesday at the San Diego Country Club.
Akana posted seven birdies and one bogey on his round and finished the tournament at 7-under 209 and a tie for fifth place. The Honolulu native was five strokes behind medalist Craig Ronne of San Diego, who posted 12-under 204.
Akana's tie for fifth marked his best finish of the season and second career Top 5. The 66 also equaled the best round for a Rainbow Warrior this season, matching
Tyler Ogawa and
Kolbe Irei. They each shot their 66 in the 50
th state at the Kā'anapali Invitational and Kapolei Invitational, respectively.
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors tied with Santa Clara for 11
th place at 8-over 872 after a final round 290. Co-host San Diego rallied to capture the team title at 22-under 842 while Day 1 co-leaders Fresno State and Colorado tied for runner-up at 846.
Josh Hayashida posted even par 72 and tied for 33
rd place at 1-under 215. Also competing for the Rainbow Warriors were
Isaiah Kanno (75=221/t-62
nd),
Kolbe Irei (78=228/t-84
th), and
Dane Watanabe (77=234/91
st).
The Rainbow Warriors will next compete in the Cowboy Classic, April 1-2 in Maricopa, Ariz.
