HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (9-7. 5-0 Big West) remained undefeated in conference play after fending off UC Davis, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. With the match tied at 3-3, freshman Joëlle Lanz pulled away to clinch the match in a three-set win on Court #6.
The Aggies captured the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 court.
Hawai'i, however, jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead winning the first three singles matches. UH's
Nikola Homolkova started things with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kaia Wolf playing at No. 3.
Ana Vilcek followed with a 6-2, 6- win over UC Davis' Mika Ikemori and although
Hannah Galindo fell in the first set, she fought her way back to down Michelle Zell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Aggies battled their way back to tie the match at 3-3. UC Davis' No. 5 Carly Schwartzberg dropped the first set, but rolled to win the last two sets over
Sheena Masuda,4-6, 7-5, 6-4 and on the No. 1 court, UCD's Arianna Stavropoulos came back from a set down to defeat UH's
Nelly Knezkova, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to knot the match score at 3-3.
The deciding match came down tot he No. 6 match. Joëlle Lanz edged out Olive Maunupau in a first set tie-breaker, but Maunupau evened things by holding off Lanz by a break in the second set. But then Lanz blanked Maunupau in the third and final set to seal the 4-3 match win for UH, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-0.
The Rainbow Wahine will head to California for two conference matches. First the Rainbow Wahine take on UC Santa Barbara (6-6, 1-0 Big West) on Friday, April 5 and then will play at Cal Poly (7-6, 2-1 BW) on Sunday, April 7.
