HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team again rallied after falling behind early but No. 20 UC Irvine pulled away late to hand the 'Bows a 12-5 loss Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
UCI clinched a three-game series sweep of the Rainbow Warriors, snapping UH's streak of 21 straight Big West series without being swept. It's also the first time under head coach
Rich Hill that Hawai'i has been swept in a conference series.
The Anteaters jumped on the 'Bows, scoring five runs in the first and one in the second to go up 6-0. UH fought back again though, scoring the next five runs to cut it to a 6-5 game.
Dallas Duarte got the 'Bows on the board in the second with an RBI single before Hawai'i loaded the bases with two outs in the third. After
Ben Zeigler-Namoa scored on a wild pitch,
Kyson Donahue launched a three-run shot out to right field to pull the Rainbow Warriors within a run through three.
UCI would come right back with three runs in the fourth, and one each in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to pull away.
Donahue led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with the three-run homer to turn in his fifth multi-hit game in the last six. Over the last six games, Donahue is 12-for-22 (.545) with eight runs scored, two doubles, a homer and six RBIs. Duarte and Miura each went 2-for-4 while
Austin Machado reached base for the 25th straight game to start the season.
The Rainbow Warriors are back in action Tuesday against Hawai'i Pacific. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
