BeachBows Split On Final Day Of Big West Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The No. 12 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team fell shy of completing an undefeated weekend after splitting a pair of matches on the final day of the  Big West Challenge Sunday at Hornet Beach. The Rainbow Wahine blanked host Sacramento State, 5-0, before falling to No. 9 Cal Poly, 5-0.

UH (14-9) concluded the three-day event with a 5-1 mark and will return to the island after playing a dozen matches on the mainland over a 10-day span. The 'Bows went 8-4 over the course of the trip, defeating three nationally-ranked squads. UH's four losses on the trip were all against teams ranked in the Top 10.

In the opening match of the day, the 'Bows breezed past host Sacramento State (5-12) in just their second ever visit to Hornet Beach. UH won all but one of the courts in straight sets. A day after their monumental rally over Long Beach State, Jaime Santer and Alana Embry picked up right where they left off with a dominating 21-8, 21-6 over Greta Davis and Kalani Hayes at the No. 1 flight to punctuate the win. The 'Bows improved to 6-0 all-time against  the Hornets.

In UH's tournament finale, the BeachBows looked to protect its unblemished Big West record against rival Cal Poly. However the Mustangs spoiled UH's plans. Cal Poly, which defeated No. 7 Long Beach State earlier in the day, stayed unbeaten in the tourney. It was the 14th straight win overall for the Mustangs who improved to 19-2 on the season. The Mustangs clinched the third and deciding point at the top of the order as Izzy Martinez and Ella Connor handed Santer and Embry their first setback of the weekend, 21-19, 21-14. UH looked to salvage points on courts 3 and 5, but fell on both in three sets.

The Rainbow Wahine will now enjoy a bye this week before heading back onto the road for the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, April 5-6.
