Rainbow Warriors Dominate Aztecs

HONOLULU – The Hawai'i baseball team clinched a series win over San Diego State in dominant fashion Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium, rolling to a 16-0 win before a crowd of 4,103 fans.

The Rainbow Warriors (14-7) banged out a season-high 20 hits led by Austin Machado's six-RBI day while Randy Abshier and three relievers combined to shut out the Aztecs, striking out 12 while holding them to just six hits.

The 'Bows got on the board first with a pair of second-inning runs to go up 2-0. After a pair of singles earlier in the inning, Jordan Donahue and Jake Tsukada cashed them in with back-to-back two-out RBI singles.

UH then broke things open in the fourth, scoring seven runs and sending 13 batters to the plate to go up 9-0. Machado got the scoring started with a three-run double to put the 'Bows up 5-0 before Ben Zeigler-Namoa added two more with a double of his own. Stone Miyao followed one batter later with a single through the right side to make it 8-0 and a bases loaded walk capped off the scoring.

Machado kept his huge day going and broke things open in the sixth, launching a three-run homer out to right field to make it 12-0. Kyson Donahue drove in two more in the frame on a two-out RBI single to stretch the lead to 14-0. UH scored two more in the seventh to give the game its final score.

Abshier turned in his second-straight scoreless start at home, working six innings with seven strikeouts while scattering five hits. The senior has 39 punch-outs over 26.0 innings at home this year and has 88 strikeouts in 68.1 innings over his career at Les Murakami Stadium.

Machado's six RBIs give him 10 runs driven in over the first two games of the series as he finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks. Jordan Donahue delivered another multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Zeigler-Namoa went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Miyao and Kyson Donahue rounded out the group of 'Bows with multiple hits as all nine starters and 12 players overall tallied hits.

The 'Bows and Aztecs conclude their series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium. Itsuki Takemoto (1-1, 1.69) will get the start for the Rainbow Warriors.
