ATHENS, Ga. — University of Hawai'i sophomore
Mario Surkovic broke the school record in the men's 200-yard freestyle at the Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet on Saturday in Athens, Ga.
Surkovic finished with a time of 1 minute, 34.49 seconds in the men's 200 free finals to lower the previous UH record of 1:34.67 set by Yuri Samouilich in 2016. Surkovic posted a time of 1:35.46 in the preliminaries Saturday morning in Georgia's Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium. He then set the new UH mark while placing second in the finals heat behind North Carolina's Patrick Hussey (1:33.19).
The Last Chance meet provides a final opportunity for swimmers to earn an NCAA Championship-qualifying time or improve upon their existing provisional cut. Surkovic entered the meet with an NCAA B Standard time of 1:35.14 set at the MPSF Championship last week in Utah and improved on his standing on Saturday.
UH's
Justin Lisoway placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 52.88 seconds and also bettered his NCAA B Standard time.
Karol Ostrowski finished second in the 50 free final with a time of 19.38 seconds and
Grant Stoddard finished second in the 100 butterfly final with a time of 46.61 seconds.
The meet concludes Sunday with Ostrowski scheduled to compete in the 100 free, Stoddard in the 200 fly and Lisoway in the 200 breast.
