Box Score HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (6-6, 4-0 Big West) fell short against Pacific (6-, 0-1 WCC), 2-4 in the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational finale. Hawai'i tied the match at 2-2, but the Tigers were able to pull away for the win on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Pacific secured the doubles point by edging out the Rainbow Wahine. Hawai'i's No. 2
Sheena Masuda and
Nelly Knezkova defeated Pacific's Megan Carmichael and Alexis Sam, 6-3. The Tigers' No. 1 Klara Kosan and Tomi Main evened the doubles action holding off UH's
Ana Vilcek and
Nikola Homolkova by a break, 6-4. On the No. 3 court, UH and Pacific were locked in a marathon battle between Liza Mladentseva/Indiya McLead and
Anna Kern/
Hannah Galindo. Pacific won the doubles point by outlasting the UH duo in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (10-8).
The Tigers went up 2-0 after Mladentseva's 6-1, 6-0 win over UH's No. 4 Galindo. But the 'Bows then knotted the score at 2-2 with wins at No. 1 and 3. Knezkova won her first match playing at the top of the order dispatching Pacific's Kosan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. UH's No. 3 Homolkova then fired a shutout, blanking Carmichael, 6-0, 6-0. On the No. 6 court, Pacific's Zoe Clydesdale-Eberle followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over UH's Kern to take a 3-2 lead. The Tigers clinched the match with a three set win by McLeod over UH's Masuda at No. 5, 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-0 to seal the 4-2 win over the Rainbow Wahine.
The Rainbow Wahine's head to California for three matches starting in the Bay Area with matches at San Jose State (March 20) and California (March 21). Hawai'i will then head to SoCal to face USC on March 24.
