BeachBows Split On First Day of East Meets West Invitational

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The No. 13 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team began its first road trip of the season by splitting a pair of matches on day one of the East Meets West Invitational at the Manhattan Beach Pier.  The Rainbow Wahine fell to No. 4 Florida State, 4-1, before defeating No. 15 Georgia State, 4-1.

In their opening match of the tournament, UH squared off against No. 4 Florida State, the fifth time this young season the BeachBows have played a top-five team nationally. The Rainbow Wahine couldn't overcome the Seminoles who took four of five courts, including three courts in straight sets. UH's lone point came at the No. 5 court where Sydney Miller and Anna Maidment defeated Caitlin Moon and Kaeli Crews in three sets. The No. 2 pair of Kaylee Glagau and Julia Thelle also took their opponents Raelyn White and Audrey Koenigto the distance  before falling 15-12 in the deciding set. The dual match loss was UH's fifth straight to the Seminoles, four of those coming in the East Meets West.

In the second match of the day, the Rainbow Wahine finally broke through with a win over a ranked team. UH won all but one court to defeat Georgia State, 4-1.. The No. 1 pair of Jaime Santer and Alana Embry, who saw their six-match win streak snapped earlier in the day, rebounded with a straight set victory, as did Glagau and Thelle who also won in straight sets at the No. 2 court. The No. 3 pair of Pani Napoleon and Julia Lawrenz and No. 4 pair Riley Wagoner and Sydney Amiatu also picked up bounce-back wins.

The Rainbow Wahine will play day two of the East Meets West Invitational when they face off against No. 8 LSU at 11:30 am. PT/8:30 am HT and No. 6 Cal at 3:00 p.m. PT/12:00 p.m. HT
