Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Moves To Kaua‘i For First Time

HONOLULU – For the first time in its storied history, the University of Hawai'i's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational women's golf tournament will be held on the island of Kaua'i at the Ocean Course Hokuala in Līhu'e.

The 38th edition of the tournament will run March 17-19 at the 5,929-yard, par-72 track. The longest-running tournament in program history was traditionally held at the Kāne'ohe Klipper Golf Course on O'ahu for 33 years however the last two years were run at Hoakalei Country Club in west O'ahu.

Named in honor of UH's first women's athletics director, The "Donnis" features a 15-team field which includes two-defending champion Sacramento State. A total of 10 teams are ranked in this week's NCAA Division I Top 100 led by No. 19 Arizona State and No. 29 North Carolina.

The rest of the field includes Boise State, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Mercer, Morehead State, New Mexico, Rutgers, San Francisco, Texas State, Tulane and Washington.

Participants will play at total of 54 holes, 18 holes each day, with a 9:00 a.m., shotgun start each day. The Ocean Course Hokuala is part of the Timbers Kaua'i, a beautiful 450-acre resort property surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Kalapakī Bay, and Hā'upu Mountain Range.

UH, which posted its lone Donnis Thompson title in the inaugural year in 1986, will feature a line-up of Monica Johnson, Jordyn Parr, Wendy Song, Emiko Sverduk, and Kellie Yamane.

Last season, the Rainbow Wahine placed eighth overall with a 915 total. Among this year's squad, Song tied for 34th and Johnson tied for 59th.

In 1999, the previously named the Rainbow Wahine Invitational was re-named the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. Dr. Thompson, who was an avid supporter of women's equality, was inducted into the school's Sports Circle of Honor in 1988 for her tremendous achievements and many contributions to UH Athletics. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 75.
