HONOLULU – In a match-up of two Top 5 teams, the third-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team needed four sets to defeat No. 5 Stanford Wednesday in the first of two non-conference matches at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-12.
The Rainbow Warriors (9-1), in the midst of an 11-match homestand, overcame a first set loss to win two of the next three sets by double digits. UH extended its win streak over the Cardinal to 10 straight, including eight consecutive in Honolulu.
Alaka'i Todd posted a career-high 17 kills, hitting .367, with a career-high nine digs and three blocks. The Kailua, O'ahu native has recorded double-digit kill totals in five of the last six matches and has surpassed his career-high twice.
Spyros Chakas added 15 kills, eight digs, and two blocks while
Chaz Galloway and
Guilherme Voss each tallied seven kills.
'Eleu Choy had a team-high 10 digs.
As a team, UH hit .346 compared to .153 for the Cardinal. In the final three sets, the Warriors hit a combined .403 and held Stanford to .080. Hawai'i posted 11.5 blocks and six aces in the match.
The Cardinal (7-2) were led by Kevin Lamp and Moses Wagner, who each had nine kills.
Stanford led for much of the opening set and used a 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. Hawai'i would not get any closer than two the rest of the set and hit .185.
UH led from start to finish in Set 2. The lead ballooned to seven at 16-9 after a three-point spurt capped by a
Kurt Nusterer overpass kill. UH went on to hit .556 in the set with only one attack error in 27 attempts.
Stanford took an early lead in Set 3 at 10-7 before the Warriors surged ahead 13-12. The Cardinal scored four straight to retake the lead at 17-15 but Hawai'i answered right back with four of their own. Consecutive blocks gave UH a 21-18 advantage and the Warriors eventually led 24-20. The Cardinal fended off two set points before Hawai'i closed it out with a block by Nusterer.

The teams meet again on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena.
