Men's Basketball Hosts Top Big West Teams This Week

HONOLULU The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team hosts two of the top three teams in the Big West this week when they face UC San Diego  on Thursday, Feb. 8 and UC Davis on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff for both games is set for 7 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

    PROMOTIONS
  • The Rainbow Warriors will celebrate Black History Month with a "Through History We Learn" t-shirt. Players and coaches will wear the shirt during warmups. The shirt will feature 15 names of historical African Americans with ties and direct impact on the state of Hawaii. The list and dedication are in partnership with the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Black Student Association.
  • 600 students sitting in the student section will be given the same "Through History We Lean" t-shirt in support of Black History Month and the team. 
  • American Savings Bank will be the title sponsor of the night and will be handing out 500 rally towels as fans enter SimpliFi Arena.
  • At halftime, the UH Pep Band will perform for the crowd "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the accepted Black National Anthem, as a part of the Black History Month celebration.
  • Also, at halftime, UH will honor two historical figures in Judge Sandra Simms and Dr. Kathryn Waddell Takara. 
  • On Saturday, the Rainbow Warriors will celebrate the Year of the Dragon for the Chinese New Year. 
  • The Majestic Culture and the Arts Association invites fans for picture taking with the Lion Dance group from 6-7 p.m. located on the concourse level ('Ewa Side) of the SimpliFi Arena, and they will perform a traditional Lion Dance at halftime. 
  • Fantastic Sams will sponsor Saturday's game and hand out 5,000 rally towels as fans enter through Gate A.

GAME STORY LINES
  • The Rainbow Warriors are coming off a road split in which they defeated Cal State Fullerton, 76-68, before losing at UC Irvine, 93-68.
  • UH currently sits in a tie for eight place in the Big West while UC San Diego dropped into a tie for second following a 85-76 loss at Long Beach.
  • UC San Diego defeated UH for the first time in five Big West meetings when the Tritons won 67-61 in La Jolla on Jan. 20. UH had a season-high 20 turnovers in the loss
  • In BIg West games, the Tritons are first in scoring offense (77.6) scoring margin (+10.6), 3FG% (.394) and least turnovers per game (8.7). 
  • The game will feature two of the top three teams in the league in 3FG made per game. UCSD averages 9.5 and Hawai'i averages 7.4 per game.
  • Bernardo da Silva leads the team in scoring (11.4) and rebounding (7.3) in Big West games and leads the conference in FG% at 61.5%.
