LA JOLLA, Calif. — The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team opened the Triton Invitational with a 21-7 rout of No. 22 San Diego State on Friday at Coggan Family Aquatic Complex on the campus of La Jolla High School.
UH sophomore center
Bia Mantellato Dias scored all five of her goals in the first half and four other Rainbow Wahine players recorded hat tricks on the opening day of the tournament hosted by UC San Diego. UH improved to 6-0 while San Diego State dropped to 2-2.
Senior
Lucia Gomez de la Puente scored three goals and added four assists. Senior
Lot Stertefeld scored on all three of her shots and assisted on three goals. Freshmen
Agatha Weston and
Esmee Roijen also contributed three goals each to UH's highest scoring total since a 22-7 win over Marist on Jan. 15, 2023, last season's opening weekend.
Mantellato Dias opened the scoring 48 seconds into the game, Stertefeld added a goal 38 seconds later and Mantellato Dias gave UH a 3-0 lead at the 5:41 mark of the first quarter.
Mantellato Dias had a hat trick in the second quarter alone and UH led 10-4 when she scored her fifth goal of the match wit 23 seconds left before halftime. Gomez de la Puente scored in each of the first three quarters and Roijen scored all three of her goals in the fourth.
Freshman
Daisy Logtens started in goal and made nine saves in the first half. Graduate student
Emma Gurasich played the second half and made four saves.
UH will next face fellow Big West member and 16
th-ranked UC Davis on Saturday at 11:20 a.m. Pacific time (9:20 a.m. Hawai'i time) at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool. The morning results will determine the matchups for the afternoon. The tournament concludes Sunday.
