Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Water Polo Splits Day Two Of The Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo split the second day of competition in the Triton Invitational defeating sixteenth-ranked UC Davis and falling to third-ranked UCLA in overtime at the Canyonview Aquatic Center on Saturday in La Jolla, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine started day with a 14-9 win over No. 16 UC Davis in the morning match. Later in the day, the 'Bows came up short against No. 3 UCLA, 13-12 in overtime. The 'Bows suffered their first loss of the season and sit at 7-1 going into Sunday's third-place match against No. 1 USC.

UH earned its sixth victory against a ranked opponent this season with the win over UC Davis. The Rainbow Wahine took the lead for the first time against the Aggies late in the second quarter and held on for the remainder of the game. Rainbow Wahine sophomore Bia Mantellato Dias led the team in scoring with her second consecutive five-goal performance in the Triton Invitational. Seniors Alba Bonamusa Boix and Lucia Gomez de la Puente combined for seven goals to help propel the 'Bows past the Aggies.

The 'Bows returned to the pool later in the afternoon and fell short in a competitive contest with UCLA. The duo of Bonamusa Boix and Gomez de la Puente continued their offensive production from earlier in the day scoring four goals each in the loss against the Bruins.

UH will take on No. 1 USC at 9:20 a.m. HT at the Canyonview Aquatic Center to close out the Triton Invitational.

Game 1 - No. 4 Hawai'i 14, No. 16 UC Davis 9

The 'Bows got off to a slow start allowing two goals to begin the game. Bonamusa Boix got the Rainbow Wahine on the board with 2:07 left in the first to cut the lead down to one. The Aggies would tack on another goal making the score 3-1 after eight minutes of play.

The deficit quickly vanished after two quick goals by Mantellato Dias in the first two minutes of the second quarter. UH and UC Davis would trade scoring runs, with the Aggies responding with two goals, and the 'Bows closing the quarter out with three goals of their own. Sophomore Tara Logan got the late-quarter scoring started, followed with another goal by Bonamusa Boix. Mantellato Dias earned a hat-trick with her go-ahead goal with 1:37 left in the second quarter, giving the Rainbow Wahine a 6-5 lead heading into the half.

The 'Bows would not look back from that point on, holding onto the lead for the remainder of the game. Mantellato Dias continued her outstanding performance by netting two more goals to begin the third quarter. Senior Lot Stertefeld recorded her first goal of the day adding to UH's 6-0 scoring run that started from the 3:54 mark in the second quarter. The Rainbow Wahine allowed one goal to end the quarter and entered the fourth period with a 9-6 lead.

UH outscored UC Davis 5-3 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and improved to 7-0 for the second consecutive season.

Graduate student Emma Gurasich started the game at goalie, recording five saves in two quarters. Freshman Daisy Logtens played the final two quarters tallying four saves.

Game 2 - No. 3 UCLA 13, No. 4 Hawai'i 12

The Rainbow Wahine found a groove early on sparked by an offensive explosion by Gomez de la Puente who earned a hat-trick in the first quarter. Gomez de la Puente scored the first three goals of the game and the quarter was capped off with goals by Lot Stertefeld and Stevilyn Griffin sending the 'Bows to a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Bruins answered back by outscoring the 'Bows 5-2 in the second quarter cutting the Rainbow Wahine lead down to two.

Bonamusa Boix and junior Jordan Wedderburn revived the offense in the third, scoring two goals each to extend the lead. The Rainbow Wahine allowed three goals in the period giving themselves a three-goal cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

The 'Bows 11-8 lead wouldn't be enough to close out the game. UH and UCLA traded scores to begin the fourth, but the Bruins would go on a 3-0 scoring run to tie the game at 12, sending the match into overtime.

The first overtime period ended quietly as neither team scored. UCLA scored the game-winning goal with 2:33 in the second overtime period giving the 'Bows their first loss of the season.

UH posted its highest goal total against UCLA since 2009 when they scored 13 goals.
