Late Surge Lifts Baseball Past Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i – The Hawai'i baseball team busted out offensively in the late innings while getting a solid combined effort on the mound to pick up a 15-2 win at Hawai'i Hilo before a large crowd at Francis Wong Stadium Wednesday.

The first meeting between Mānoa and Hilo on the Big Island since 2016 was tied 1-1 after five innings before the Rainbow Warriors scored 14 unanswered runs to pull away late.

Elijah Ickes delivered the go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth, lining a two-out double into the left field corner to score Jake Tsukada and Jordan Donahue to make it 3-1. The 'Bows added two more in the seventh inning when Kyson Donahue crushed a long home run out to right field to lead off the inning and Matthew Miura scored on a wild pitch later in the frame, making it 5-1.

Miura broke it open with a three-run double in the eighth and the 'Bows added four more in the ninth highlighted by RBI doubles by Dallas Duarte and Kyson Donahue and a Jared Quandt three-run homer.

UH got on the board first with a single run in the second inning. Miura worked a one-out walk then stole both second and third before coming in to score on a Tsukada safety squeeze to make it 1-0.

The Vulcans scored an unearned run in the third to tie it at 1-1 where it would stay until the sixth as UH stranded six runners on base from the third through fifth innings.

Ickes turned in another big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of doubles while drawing a walk. Kyson Donahue came off the bench and reached base all three times, homering and driving in a run with a double and walking. Miura and Quandt each drove in three runs while the 'Bows worked 12 walks to run their season and Big West-leading total to 68 on the season.

Seven different Hawai'i pitchers combined to hold the Vulcans to just two runs on four hits while striking out nine. Danny Veloz picked up the win throwing two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts while Alex Giroux worked scoreless seventh and eighth innings.

Big Island native Tai Atkins threw a scoreless second inning and was one of four Hawai'i Island natives on the Rainbow Warrior roster to see action in the game along with Duarte, Stone Miyao and Bronson Rivera.

The Rainbow Warriors return to Les Murakami Stadium to host Holy Cross for a four-game series starting Friday at 6:35 p.m.
