Men’s Basketball Puts Away Long Beach State, 73-65

HONOLULU  —  In a battle of two surging teams, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team toppled Long Beach State, 73-65, Saturday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 16-12 overall and 8-8 in the Big West with their sixth win in their last eight contests.

At the same time they halted Long Beach State's (18-10, 10-6) five-game win streak and moved within just a half game in the race for a top-four seed in next month's Big West Championship.

Justin McKoy scored a career-high 26  points, shooting 10-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 on three-pointers. Noel Coleman added 18 points, scoring 15 of those points after the break, including a pair of timely three-pointers to keep LBSU at bay. AJ George led LBSU with 18 points, while Lassina Traore had a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds.

UH took the lead for good less than three minutes into the game, held a seven-point lead at halftime and maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half. UH drained 10-of-28 three-point attempts while holding the Beach to  0-of-10 behind the arc.

UH got off to a strong start hitting five of its first seven shots and got seven points in the first five minutes alone from McKoy. The 'Bows led for the near entirety of the first half enjoying its biggest gap of nine points before eventually taking a 40-33 lead into the locker room. UH shot 47 percent in the first half and committed just three turnovers, while McKoy had 15 points by the break.

McKoy drained a three-pointer on opening possession of the second half to give UH its first double-digit lead of the game.  A Coleman three-pointer capped a 10-2 run that put UH up 50-35 less than five minutes into the second half.

LBSU trailed by double-digits throughout, but made one last push and cut the deficit to six with less than 80 seconds left. But Coleman answered with a driving layup to put UH back up by eight and drained four free throws in the final 34 seconds to seal the win.

UH finished 15-of-19 from the line and out-rebounded the Beach 34-29.

The Rainbow Warriors now head off for their final two regular-season road games, beginning with a matchup versus UC Davis on Thursday, Feb. 29. Tipoff is 6:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. HT.
