Men’s Golf Posts 2-Over In First Round of Burns Intercollegiate

LIHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a 2-over 290 in the first round of the 47th John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at the Ocean Course Hokuala.
 
Led by three golfers who carded 1-under 71 on the day – Blaze Akana, Dane Watanabe, and Kolbe Irei – the Rainbow Warriors are tied with Fresno State for 14th place. Long Beach State holds the first day lead at 15-under 273 followed by three teams who shot 10-under 278 – Grand Canyon, Washington State, and Arizona.
 
Individually, Arizona's Yannick Malik tied the tournament's course record with an 8-under 64 to hold the lead by one stroke over San Diego State's Justin Hastings (65).
 
UH's top three golfers combined for 14 birdies on the day, including Akana's six. Also competing for UH are Tyler Ogawa (77, t-101st) and Josh Hayashida (81, t-116th).
 
Four others are competing as individuals – Anson Cabello (77, t-101st), Isaiah Kanno (78, t-108th), James Whitworth (81, t-116th), and Garrett Takeuchi (83, 121st).
 
The tournament's second round is Friday with a 9:30 a.m., shotgun start.
