Women's Basketball Pulls Away from UT Martin

HONOLULU–The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team outscored UT Martin 22-4 in the third quarter to cruise to a 47-39 victory over the UT Martin on Day Two of the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday afternoon.

After being held scoreless in the first half, the tandem of Lily Wahinekapu and Daejah Phillips helped spark UH's third quarter power surge, combining for 18 of UH's 30 second half points. Wahinekapu notched her second career double-double, posting a team-high 10 points with a career-high 11 rebounds–five of which came on the offensive glass. Phillips added eight points with two steals, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Ritorya Tamilo finished a point shy of a double-double, adding nine points with 10 boards.

For the game, the Rainbow Wahine out-rebounded the Skyhawks 39-31. After UTM out scored UH 24-17 in the first half, UH held them to just four points in the third quarter and 15 total points for the second half. Conversely, UH went 7-11 while shooting 63.8% of their shots in the third.

The first quarter was tightly contested. Neither team was able to pull away, with the largest deficit being just three points for each side. The 'Bows eventually claimed an 11-9 lead after finishing the first quarter on a 5-0 run.

By contrast, the second quarter was all Skyhawks. The start of the quarter mirrored the first, with both teams trading buckets. But with just over four minutes left, UT Martin seized control with a 13-0 run on 4-of-4 shooting to end the first half. As the Skyhawks pulled ahead, the Rainbow Wahine went cold. The 'Bows made just one of their final eight shots of the half as UT Martin held them scoreless for the final 4:32 of the second quarter.

Hawai'i however came out of halftime on fire, stealing the momentum back scoring 11 unanswered points to kick off the third quarter. UH kept things rolling, finishing the third quarter with a 6-0 run. The 'Bows hit five of their last six shots to take a 39-28 lead. UH shot 54% in the third quarter, while holding UT Martin to just four points and 7.7% shooting in the quarter.

The Skyhawks made one last push in the fourth quarter, pressuring the Rainbow Wahine with a full court press for much of the final 10 minutes. UT Martin scored four straight points to get back within seven points, but back-to-back buckets by Wahinekapu and Phillips pushed the 'Bows back ahead by double-digits. Hawai'i kept UT Martin at arms length for the rest of the game to seal the win.

The Rainbow Wahine have now won five straight games, while pushing their home win streak to 15 games. The last time UH lost at home was in November 2023. The 5-1 start is UH's best start under head coach Laura Beeman. It is the best start for the 'Bows since the 1997-98 season when UH started 23-1 under head coach Vince Goo.

This was the second all-time meeting between Hawai'i and UT Martin. UH now holds a 2-0 record against the Skyhawks, beating them 73-69 in their first meeting on Nov. 16, 2012.

The Rainbow Wahine will wrap up the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Sunday, Dec. 1 against No. 1-ranked UCLA at 2;30 p.m. HT.
