Ramirez Tamayo, Belyakov, Ostrowski Record Wins on Day 2 of SMU Invite

DALLAS, Texas — The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swim teams competed on Day Two of the SMU Invitational at the Roberson & Lindley Aquatics Center on Thursday. The nine-team invitational includes BYU, Drury, Hawai'i, Miami, North Carolina, North Texas, Stanford, Wyoming and host SMU. The second day of competition was highlighted by wins by Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo in the 3-Meter dive, Catherin Belyakov in the 200 individual medley and Karol Ostrowski in the 50 freestyle.

In the morning preliminary rounds, the 'Bows swam well, advancing to the "A" Finals in eight of 10 evening events–including wins in the 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle. Two-time Big West Athlete of the Week Belyakov bettered her time, ranked second all-time in UH history at 1:52.84. In the same race, UH's Zofia Tyminoska also improved her seventh place ranking in the UH record books, shaving her time down to 2:01.03. 

UH's Karol Ostrowski also finished first in the prelims with a time of 18.89 in the Men's 50 Free. The Hawai'i speedster was one of four Rainbow Warriors to finish the prelim in the top eight with Edward Stoddard  and Jordan Meacham finishing third and fourth respectively with times of 19.64 and 19.69.Dietrich Meyer came in tied for sixth at 19.85.

Belykov came back in the night session and pulled away for the win to continue her dominance in the 200 IM. In the A Final, she lowered her time for the second time on Thursday to 1:57.82. Teammate Tyminska also lowered her time, finishing in third place (just two-tenths out of second place) with a 2:00.54 to move up to No. 6 in the UH record books.

In the A Finals of the 50 Free, Ostrowski threw on the afterburners to set a new pool record at the Roberson & Lindley Aquatics Center powering his way for win touching the wall with a time of 18.99. 

In the women's diving prelims, UH freshmen Macie Wheeler finished sixth (281.85) and Lovisa Gustavsson was ninth (262.95) to advance to the finals in the women's 1 Meter Springboard event. UH's Avery Coates just missed the cut finishing in 13th with 243.05 points.

In the men's 3 Meter prelims, UH freshmen Juan Esteban Ramirez Tamayo was fourth (331.95) and Brandon Shepherd was 10th (269.70) to the finals on the men's side.


Ramirez Tamayo won the 3M springboard finals with a total of 711.30 points. He finished with a forward 2-½ somersault pike. He averaged 7.2 points and had an average round score of 63.23. Shepherd finished in 10th place with a total of 554.25 and average round score of 47.43.
  In the women's 1M event, UH's Wheeler finished in fifth with 554.80 total points and an average round score of 45.49. Gustavsoon came in 11th place with 496.75 total points and an average round score of 38.97.

The SMU Invite continues on Friday, Nov. 22. Preliminary rounds will start at 6:00 a.m. HT. the women's 3M and men's 1M springboard events will begin with prelims at 11:00 a.m. HT immediately followed by the finals for both. The night session begins at 2:00 p.m. HT for the finals.
