Men’s Basketball Turns Back Chaminade In Valley Isle Exhibition

PUKALANI, Maui – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team built a double-digit lead before fending off a second-half Chaminade rally with a 85-80 win Saturday night  at Ka'ulaheanuiokamoku Gym on the campus of Kamehameha-Maui

In their first game on the Valley Island in 10 years, the Rainbow Warriors picked up a win over a scrappy Silversword squad.  The goodwill trip, which also included a free keiki clinic with Chaminade at Lahainaluna High School on Friday, was organized in conjunction with the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Maui.

Akira Jacobs led the 'Bows with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting while Marcus Greene delivered some clutch buckets down the stretch and finished with 16 points, 10 of which came in the final 11 minutes of the game. Tanner Christiansen turned in a double-double performance, scoring 13 points and grabbing 17 boards while Tom Beattie added 13 points.

UH used a 14-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to open up a 45-33 lead with 18:01 to play, but the Silverswords came storming back and eventually took the lead at 63-62 with 8:56 remaining.

The Rainbow Warriors responded by scoring the next 10 points, six of which came courtesy of Greene, highlighted by a four-point play to put UH up seven with 7:33 to go. Chaminade again battled back, trimming the Hawai'i lead to just one with 2:54 left before a Tanner Christiansen dunk and a Greene layup put UH back up by five with a minute to play and seal the win.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with 10 ties and 12 lead changes. Chaminade led 33-31 late in the first half, but that when UH went on its decisive run. The 'Bows held the Swords scoreless for the final 2:43 and Greene's buzzer-beating layup capped a 9-0 run that put UH up 40-33 at the break.

UH shot 51.9 percent to Chaminade's 32.5 percent but committed 29 turnovers to keep the Swords in the game. Hawai'i also won the rebounding battle, 53-36, but the Chaminade went 10-of-31 from three-point range while the 'Bows shot 5-of-19.

UH opens the regular season with the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Classic, Nov 8,10 and 11 at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center.
