HONOLULU — University of Hawai'i outside hitter
Caylen Alexander picked up her fourth straight Big West women's volleyball Offensive Player of the Week award on Monday and broke a conference record with her seventh honor this season.
Alexander averaged 6.33 kills per set with a total of 57, and posted a .301 hitting percentage over Hawai'i's two-match road trip and surpassed the Big West's previous single-season record of six Offensive Player of the Week awards won by Cal Poly's Kylie Atherstone in 2007.
Alexander opened the week by putting away 36 kills — the highest total in a Big West match this season — on a career-high 85 attempts at UC Riverside on Nov. 7. She went 24-for-49 with just one error over the final three sets, hitting .469 over that stretch, and finished at .318 for the match. She came up two kills shy of the career high she set against Texas State on Sept. 14 and became the first UH player with two 30-plus kill performances in a season since Emily Hartong in 2012.
Alexander followed with 21 kills in 51 attempts in a four-set win at UC Davis on Saturday, posting 20-plus kills in her 14th match this season. Alexander also had and aces and was in on four blocks, including two solo, to help UH move into a tie for first place in the conference race.
Alexander remains second in the country in total kills (514), kills per set (5.35), and total points (564.0) and ranks third in points per set (5.88). She leads the Big West in each of those categories.
In Big West matches, Alexander's averages jump to 5.70 kill per set and 6.21 points per set.
The Rainbow Wahine (16-8, 10-4 Big West) enter their final homestand of the season as part of a four-team tie atop the Big West standings. UH is even with Cal Poly, UC Davis and UC San Diego with Long Beach State one game behind the lead pack. The 'Bows face the Beach on Friday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center and take on UC San Diego on Senior Night on Saturday. UH seniors
Tayli Ikenaga and
Kate Lang will be honored following the home finale.
